Finance information for initial teacher education courses

Employment Based Initial Teacher Education (EBITE) Courses

If you become a Trainee Teacher on the Employment Based Initial Teacher Education courses you will be an employee of a school and be paid a salary as agreed with the school. There are limited government grants available to schools to contribute to the cost of this salary.

Please note that we are unable to offer funded places on the Employment Based routes in Welsh schools.

School Centred Initial Teacher Education (SCITE) Courses

Several sources of financial support are available to Trainee Teachers whilst on the SCITE courses. The following information gives a brief outline of student support arrangements, which are reviewed annually.

For up-to-date information you should contact the DfE (Department for Education), Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, or your Local Authority.

Sources of support for Home or EU (European Union) students include:

  • Training Bursary (tax free) – amounts vary depending on the course you are completing. The Teaching Agency website provides up to date information about the training bursary amounts.
  • Student Loans, Grants and Tuition Fee Loans - contact Student Finance England or the relevant student finance authority for your region.
  • Additional hardship funding will be available to apply for.

SCITE courses have tuition fees payable. Tuition fees for 2012/13 are £8,350 subject to approval by OFFA.

Trainees can apply for help with tuition fees. It is advisable to contact your Local Authority and the Student Loans Company as early as possible in the application process.

Non-EU Students do not receive public funding support. As such they must pay the full cost of tuition fees for international students. Tuition fees for international students is currently being set. The amount of tuition fees for international students is set on an annual basis.
