Member School Successes at the Midlands Teaching Awards

The ceremony for the 2010 Teaching Awards for the Midlands region took place in Birmingham earlier this month.  Organisers of the event hailed the finalists as “ambassadors for teaching at its best.”

A number of Robert Owen Group member schools who work with us in training teachers through the Initial Teacher Education routes were honoured at the ceremony.

Liam Nolan, Headteacher at Perry Beeches School, Birmingham, was awarded a distinction in the Secondary School Headteacher of the Year category. Commenting on the award, Mr Nolan said,

“I’m absolutely delighted to have been put forward for this award by parents of my students. I’m also pleased that new young headteachers who can make a difference are being recognised nationally.”

Katie Beech, Head of RE at Baxter College in Kidderminster, was awarded Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School. Her nomination for the award included the following statement,

“She has certainly put theory into practice at our school and has given students a reason to learn and consider their faith. A student in her GCSE group stated “I didn’t believe in anything particularly before I had Mrs B. She got me to look at me and where I sat in the world – I will never be the same again, thanks
to this wonderful lady."

Paul Evason, from Haybridge High School in Stourbridge was awarded Outstanding New Teacher of the Year.

Francis Tunney, Headteacher at Painsley Catholic College in Stoke on Trent was awarded Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School. Mr Tunney was delighted and surprised to receive the award. He said he was happy to be a nominee. Mr Tunney said that he received the award on behalf of the students, who are outstanding, the staff at Painsley who go that extra mile for the benefit of the students, and the parents and governors who are highly supportive.

Congratulations to all involved in the awards.  It is great to see member schools and their staff members recognised for their excellence and we are proud to be training the next generation of teachers with them.
